Buying Ballet Wear For Examinations

There are two main dance academies in the United Kingdom - Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD). These two deal with dance examinations professionally and are widely respected by professional ballet dancers throughout the world. Both organisations have strict regulations for uniforms - for taking an exam in RAD, for example, a ballerina needs a RAD ballet skirt, RAD ballet shoes and other approved wear.

It may be interesting to know more about ballet wear for those taking ballet seriously. If one is going to become a professional ballet dancer or at least reach a serious level of dancing chances are high that taking a RAD or ISTD examination may be a must. And as these examinations require specific uniforms, buying them is likely to be mandatory at some point. So knowing more is likely to help ballerinas make a better choice when going for ballet wear next time. A suitable RAD ballet skirt, for example, may vary in colour and design for different examination levels.

Various exam levels require various approved wear. RAD has many grades and clothing changes with the exam difficulty level. Pre-primary and Primary examinations require pink, pale blue or white cap-sleeved or sleeveless leotards. Young ballerinas will also need soft satin ballet shoes. A RAD ballet skirt is similar to a junior-sized Romantic ballet tutu. Colours allowed are pink, blue or white. Also, special approved tights should be worn. A ballerina not wearing these garments is likely not to be allowed to take an examination.

First- and second-grade students have a little more freedom when it comes to selecting a proper authentic RAD uniform. Leotards need to be cap-sleeved or sleeveless as before, however, mulberry, navy blue and red are added to the range of colours. Socks or tights need to be pink. A RAD ballet skirt stays the same, while ballet shoes can be now made of soft leather or soft satin.

The students of higher grades can wear only white short-sleeved and sleeveless leotards. It is worth noting that both juniors and adults may pass examinations of these grades, so both adult and junior sizes are available. RAD approved socks for these grades need to be white just as leotards. Shoes may be made of both canvas and leather. However, they may be only white or beige to be suitable for RAD examinations. It is also worth mentioning that RAD approved tights at this level need to be navy blue. A RAD ballet skirt may be pink, blue or white.

So before buying ballet wear it is good to know how exactly it is going to be used. And if taking ballet examinations is part of the plan, it is a must to buy clothing that is recommended by RAD or ISTD. Consulting a professional may be the best guide into buying a high quality ISTD or RAD ballet skirt or leotard. All in all, finding a good uniform should not constitute a problem since there are many stores selling it both on- and offline.
